Registration of Overseas Electors
Consequent upon amendment to the Representation of the People Act, Indian citizens based overseas have been enabled to be enrolled as voters and would be able to vote in person in India as ‘overseas electors’.
Accordingly, every citizen of India above the age of 18 years and who has not acquired foreign citizenship but who is absenting from his/her place of ordinary residence in India as mentioned in his Indian passport shall be entitled to have his/her name registered in the electoral roll for the concerned constituency under which his/her place of ordinary residence in India as mentioned in Indian passport falls.
After registration, the overseas elector will be entitled to cast his vote in elections held in his constituency in India. Please note that voting can be done only in person at designated polling station of the constituency in India.
The application for registration in the electoral roll in prescribed Form 6A can be downloaded from Election Commission of India website www.eci.nic.in.
Along with Form 6A, photocopy of relevant pages of passport of the applicant containing photograph and other particulars including address in India and valid visa need to be enclosed. All the copies of relevant pages of applicant’s passport are required to be duly self attested by the overseas elector.
After attestation, the application for registration may be filed either in person or sent by post to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the constituency within which the place of ordinary residence of the applicant in India as given in his/her valid passport falls. Addresses of all EROs are available on the website of the Election Commission of India i.e. www.eci.nic.in.
