Andaman and Nicobar Islands (UT) This Union Territory consists of a string of islands in the Bay of Bengal, lying between Myanmar and Sumatra. The capital is Port Blair.

Andhra Pradesh This state lies in the southeast of India, and is bounded by Orissa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The capital is Hyderabad and the principal language is Telugu.

Arunachal Pradesh The state of Arunachal Pradesh was formerly known also as the 'North East Frontier Agency' or NEFA. It is the most northeasterly of the states of India.

Assam Popularly called as the land of the red river and blue hills, Assam is the gateway to the northeastern part of India.

Bihar Bihar is a large and populous landlocked state in the lower Gangetic valley, with its capital at Patna. It was called Magadh in ancient times.
On November 15th, 2000, part of the south of the state was converted to a new state-Jharkhand.

Chandigarh (UT) The Union Territory of Chandigarh lies between the states of Punjab and Haryana, and functions as the capital of both of them.

Chhattisgarh Chhattisgarh was formed in November 2000 from the eastern part of the territory of the old Madhya Pradesh state. It is bordered by Madhya Pradesh, Bihar (Jharkhand), Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The capital is at Raipur.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli (UT) This quiet magical land of 70 villages, sandwiched between the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, near Daman, was under the Portuguese, till it attained freedom in 1954.

Daman and Diu (UT) Situated on the southern border of the state of Gujarat, off the Saurashtra coast bordering Junagadh district, is the Union Territory of Daman and Diu. A colony held by the Portuguese for a long period even after India got independence, Daman and Diu became a part of the erstwhile Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu in 1961. When Goa was conferred with statehood in 1987, Daman and Diu became a separate Union Territory.

Delhi Delhi is the capital of the Republic of India. It is one of the constituent states of the federal republic. New Delhi is a loosely defined part of greater Delhi.

Goa Goa is a state within the Republic of India, and is situated on its western coast. Formerly a Portugese colony between the 16th century and 1961, it was liberated by the Indian Army in Dec. 1961. Gujarat Gujarat, is one of India's most industrialized states, in western India, covering an area of 196,024 sq km (75,685 sq mi). It has a fertile plain land in the south cut by several rivers, low hills in the west, and broad mudflats in the north that adjoin the Thar (Great Indian) Desert.

Haryana Haryana is a state bordering India's national capital, New Delhi. Historically, the state is well known for the battles of Panipat and the ancient city of Kurukshetra. The state has a mainly agriculture oriented economy, though recently there has been massive industrial growth.

Himachal Pradesh Nestled in the Himalayas, the world's mightiest mountain ranges, Himachal Pradesh is blessed with some of the most spectacular landscapes anywhere. Jammu and Kashmir Jammu and Kashmir, India's northernmost state, consists of three regions differing in topography and culture. In the south, Jammu is a transition zone from the Indian plains to the Himalayas. Jammu was the stronghold of Hindu Dogra kings and abounds with popular temples and secluded forest retreats. It includes the city of Jammu, the state's winter capital. The Kashmir Valley, the second region, is a large, fertile, region enclosed by the high snow-capped ridges of the Pir Panjal range to the west and south, and the main Himalaya range to the east. Its' population is predominantly Muslim, with a history that can be traced back to the 14th century. It includes the city of Srinagar, the state's summer capital. Ladakh is the northern-most region of the state, with a bleak terrain of barren mountains. Hilltop monasteries make Ladakh one of the best living traditions of Tibetan Buddhism in the world today.

Lakshadweep (UT) The Laccadive Islands, renamed Lakshadweep in 1973, are located in the Arabian Sea, just off the coast of Kerala. Of the 36 coral islands covering a land area of 32 sq. km, only ten are inhabited by simple folk whose language is close to that spoken in Kerala.(Malayalam).
They are, in descending order of size, Minicoy, Andrott, Kavaratti, Kadmat, Agatti, Amini, Kalpeni, Kiltan, Chetlat and Bitra.

Madhya Pradesh Madhya Pradesh, in its present form, came into existence on November 1,2000 following its bifurcation to create a new state of Chhattisgarh.The undivided Madhya Pradesh was founded on November 1, 1956.Madhya Pradesh, because of its central location in India, has remained a crucible of historical currents from North, South, East and West.

Maharashtra Maharashtra is a state of the Indian Union, in the central western area. Much of its territory was once called Maratha. Its capital is Mumbai (Bombay) and its principal language is Marathi. The people are often also called Marathi.

Manipur Manipur, which literally means "the land of jewels", has been described by Lord Irwin as "the Switzerland of India".

Meghalaya Meghalaya, meaning "abode of the clouds", is one of the country's newest states. Carved out of the state of Assam, Meghalaya is one of the seven sister states of the North-Eastern region, bordered by Assam in the north and Bangladesh in the south.
Meghalaya is divided into five administrative districts of the Jaintia hills, East and West Garo hills and East and West Khasi hills. It is among the wettest places on earth. The state is home to an extraordinary diversity of people, which includes the Khasi, Jantia and Garo tribes.

Mizoram Mizoram is towards southern most tips of the north eastern states, sharing boarders of Manipur, Assam, Tripura then jutting down between Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Nagaland Nagaland is located in the extreme North-Eastern end of India, approximately between 25°6'.... 27°4' Latitude North of the Equator and between 93°20'E.... 95°15'E Longitude. It is bounded by Myanmar in the East; Assam in the West; Arunachal Pradesh and a part of Assam in the North with Manipur in the South.

Orissa The tropical state of Orissa lies along the eastern seaboard of India, on the Bay of Bengal. Its main attractions are the temples of the capital Bhubaneswar, the long sandy beach at Puri, and the great Sun temple at Konarak.

Pondicherry (UT) Pondicherry is at present, a union territory with its area scattered over three different states in the country.
The capital of the union territory of Pondicherry is also known as 'Pondicherry' and is situated on the Coromandel Coast on the Bay of Bengal, at a distance of 162 Kms from Chennai.

Punjab The modern Indian state of Punjab is situated in the North West of India. Its name is derived from the greater Punjab, which stretches across India and Pakistan, and includes Haryana and Chandigarh in India, and West Punjab in Pakistan. The name is derived from 'Panj' (five) and 'Ab' (river) meaning 'five rivers'. Punjab is also sometimes spelled 'Panjab'.

Rajasthan The present State of Rajasthan was formed after a long process of integration which began on March 17, 1948 and ended on November 1, 1956. Before integration it was called Rajputana; after integration it came to be known as Rajasthan.
At present there are 32 districts (including the new district of Karauli), 105 sub-divisions, 241 tehsils, 37889 inhabited villages and 222 towns in the State.

Sikkim Sikkim the 22nd state of India, was a kingdom headed by the Chogyal till it merged with India in 1973. Now a prosperous state within the Indin Union, Sikkim is relatively tiny in size, around 40 miles wide and 80 miles long.Nevertheless, Sikkim is a treasure house of Flora and fauna, including 500 species of natural orchids and around the same number of Butterflies. Relatively new to the concepts of democracy, Sikkim is governed by an elected representative. Sikkim also is known as "Denzong" meaning Valley Of Rice as it is the first cultivable area south of the Tibetan Plateau. The third highest mountain in the world, Khan-chen-dzonga,is on the western fringe of Sikkim.

Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu or "the land of Tamil" is the southern-most state of India.
Tamil Nadu is a beautiful state nestled in the southern Indian peninsula, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal and the deep blue Indian Ocean. It is a heady combination of tropical climate, cooler hill resorts, ancient culture, and friendly people making it an ideal holiday destination.

Tripura Tripura, the ancient land of mysterious past is located in the north Eastern region of India between 22.56 and 24''.32' North latitude and 92"09' and 92"20' east longitude and is bounded on the north west south and south east by the international boundary of Bangladesh. In the east it has a common boundary with Assam and Mizoraam.

Uttar Pradesh Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India. Called in the ancient times as Madhyadesh, it became United Provinces during the British period. The present name Uttar Pradesh means “Northern Province”.

Uttaranchal The state of Uttaranchal was created in November 2000 from the northern Himalayan region of the old Uttar Pradesh state. Its capital is at Dehra Dun, and it is bordered by Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Tibet, and Nepal.

West Bengal The Indian state of West Bengal is part of the Bengal country, the eastern part being the modern nation of Bangladesh. The majority of the Bengal country lies in the delta of the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers.
